It has been part of my own journey, through witchcraft and magick, to make peace with the late 80’s and early 90’s American witchcraft landscape. To whatever end I was prejudiced - or wise - I had little-to-no interest in Wicca, New Age culture, or the Celtic revivalist cosplay that was being presented as the closest approximation of “my” heritage and cultural “tradition”, available.

I knew something about this Barnes and Noble Craft didn’t smell right - at least as it was being presented, then - and frankly, some of that milieu likely kept me away from my home base, in witchcraft, for many years longer than it should have.

From my earliest dabbling with the occult, as a young person, I was always drawn toward ecstatic and spirit-based magickal modalities, like conjure. When I came to understand the core tension of working with ancestors that were *not* my own, I was again confronted with the disconnect that I felt with the available Irish/Scots material, on the one hand, and the very real (but very Christian!) pow-wow tradition on the other side. My ancestors, and I, felt long at odds.

This strange and ecstatic manifestation of the beardless God of Gundestrop is part of a larger reintegration of the mytho-poetic landscape of my heritage, reveling in the mystery, rather than being bogged in the cul-de-sac of authenticity and the accompanying imposter syndrome. I allowed inspiration to drive, yes. But all the while, I made sure to keep little touchstones of that Gundestrop icon - his odd short-pants, his delicate slippers, his incredibly specific antler patterning. He is an oddly androgynous and lithe god of hunting, and the deep wode.

It has been a pleasure, and a surprise, to meet Him, now, and in this way.
