All hail the Toad Cvlt! 🐸🍄🔥🍄🐸

These talismanic dolls are the culmination of months of spellwork and deep-diving into the lore and magick of the toad. A beast that dwells in spaces between, the Mandrake Toad embodies a twilight realm, wherein the perceived space between flora, and fauna, thins to non-existence. A vessel to attract and house the bvfonine spirits, who coalesce where Saturn meets Venus, death-dealer and enchanter. 

These OOAK poppets are hand-sculpted, painted, and sewn with dozens of magickal materials, and with regard for appropriate planetary and astrological timing. Each Mandrake Toad bears an ensorcelled "toadstone", protruding from their foreheads, that serves as a beacon and battery for those tutelary spirits, that consider the toad to be their kin (a more detailed description of this ritual can be found on an Instagram post, dated August 29). These stones are an ideal surface to "feed" the Toad-spirit, with offertory Oil Bufo, or other offertory libations.

Throughout European folklore, the toad has represented alchemical transformation and the chemical science of poison. Seemingly morphing from fish, to land creature, to resurrected muck-beast, the toad’s life and death cycle proved fascinating to the minds of early scientists and mystics. Historical accounts place toads as a witch’s familiar, par excellence, and witch trial testimonials attest to interspecial wet-nursing, elaborate bone collection, and the harvesting of toxins, for night-flight. Indeed, every species of toad is poisonous, although only a few produce enough of a toxin called bufotenin, a psychedelic compound that is closely related to DMT, to be harmful to humans. This poison - and the toads’ status as a creature that lives above, and below, the ground - strongly correlates the toad to the poisoner’s garden.
